Batch Processing Sample

Overview

In this batch processing sample, we'll be rating many packages at once using Excel.  We'll be using a style and spreadsheet provided by the OzLINK for UPS tool.  If you would like to learn how to set up your own styles instead, see the Style Tutorial.

1.  Open the sample file

a.  In OzLINK for UPS, click the Setup menu, then click Rating
b.  Click the Batch Processing Sample button to open the sample file in Excel.  (Please install Excel if the file does not open.)

2.  Look at the columns in the sample file

The sample Excel file has all the details we need to ask UPS for a shipping rate and to record the response.

The following columns already have details about the packages to be rated:
  • Company
  • Street
  • City
  • State
  • Zip
  • Country
  • Service
  • Weight

These columns would normally be filled in beforehand by moving your order or shipment information into the appropriate columns.  If your information isn't tracked using Excel already, almost all ERPs and accounting systems have a way to easily export information to Excel.

There is also a set of empty columns for receiving the rate information back from UPS.  They are:
  • UPS Published Rate
  • UPS Negotiated Rate
  • Days in Transit
  • Delivery Date
  • Delivery DOW
  • Delivery Time
  • Error

These columns will be filled with useful information once we ask UPS to rate the packages.

3.  Send information to UPS

a.  Select the Ms Siri cell by clicking on it.  We do this because once we click the UPS button, OzLINK will process information from the currently selected row and move down from there.

b.  Click on the Send to UPS button, then wait for processing to finish.

Microsoft Office 2003 or earlier:
The button will be in your main toolbar, and looks like this:

Microsoft Office 2007 or later:
Click on the Add-Ins tab to find the buttons added by OzLINK:

4.  Wait for processing to finish

Clicking or typing will interrupt the process, so make sure the last line is finished before doing anything else.

5.  View the results

You can now view the results in your Excel sheet.  Your results will not match those below, but the cells will be filled in with rating information for each of the packages in your spreadsheet.  You can use that information to make decisions about your shipments.

6.  Customize your style

You can change the input information, output information, and even the transaction by adjusting a style or creating a new one.  To learn how this style was created and how to make your own, see:
